How effective are online sessions of Jungian Analysis?

However, thanks in a large part to the internet, people have been able to stay connected and continue working much as usual. Zoom calls with colleagues have started to punctuate people’s days, live streams have filled in for physical events, and Slack messages have become the new office cooler conversations.

Therapy sessions have also been able to take advantage of the seismic shift online. Rather than asking their clients to attend in-person sessions, most therapists have taken to offering online sessions via video calls, allowing them to continue treatment from the comfort of their homes.

But how effective have these sessions been for Jungian Analysis? And do they offer the same benefits as in-person sessions?

What are the benefits of online Jungian Analysis?

There are numerous benefits to online sessions of Jungian Analysis. Here are just a few:

Safe environment

Many of the people who sign up to Jungian Analysis suffer from anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which makes spending time in unfamiliar environments a daunting prospect.

With online sessions, clients can enjoy all the benefits of speaking with a trained analyst from the comfort of their homes. There is no need to travel on crowded public transport, nor sit in the office of a stranger during sessions.

Access to remote areas

Typically, the best Jungian analysts operate from offices based in locations such as Harley Street in Mayfair, London. However, for those who live outside of big cities, or even big towns, accessing these offices can be awkward. For those who don’t have cars, they have to rely on public transport, which can be unreliable or demand taking long-winded routes.

Online sessions of Jungian Analysis offer all people the opportunity to get access to the best quality treatment, regardless of where they live. Even those in other countries can sign up to sessions – all that’s needed is a laptop and good internet connection.

Convenience & cost

The idea of paying to travel to and from therapy sessions can be off-putting for some and may affect their decision to take up treatment, particularly when sessions are expensive to begin with.

By engaging in online Jungian Analysis, clients can avoid the costs involved in transport, as well as saving time. Everything can be done from one’s home without needing to leave.

What’s more, some therapists offer online sessions at lower rates than in-person sessions. This can help further reduce the costs involved in treatment.

How effective are online sessions of Jungian Analysis?

For therapy in any form to be effective, the therapist and client must be able to form a relationship over the course of the sessions. Due to the nature of speaking to someone via a digital platform, some dispute the ability of these relationships to develop for effective treatment to take place.

Another concern is that therapists don't have the opportunity to observe the patient face-to-face, something that’s often crucial to an accurate assessment and diagnosis. For example, tone of voice, body language, and overall demeanor, which provide subtle insight  into an individual, may be more difficult to detect through a screen.

However, a number of studies into the efficacy of online therapy show positive results. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Psychological Disorders, online therapy is, "effective, acceptable and practical health care."

The study found that online therapy was equally as effective as face-to-face treatment for major depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalised anxiety disorder.
