The Benefits Of Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is used as a form of alternative medicine in all parts of the world. It was first developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi, a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine and particularly of body manipulation. He developed the first colleges of Shiatsu in 1940 and since then practitioners of this healing process have followed the original methods and treatment options.

Understanding Chi

Shiatsu massage is not the same as Western styles of massage. It includes more finger pressure to stimulate various energies within the body that may become blocked or out of balance. The principles of Shiatsu massage focus on the circulation of the body’s energy, known as Chi or Qi. This body energy, the Chi, moves along pathways in the body called meridians. Chi moves through the body as positive energy called the yang, which enters the body to provide positive balance. As the yang comes in the yin, the negative energy, is moved out. This system has to stay in balance and requires a harmony in the movement of the yin and yang energies. Neither is better than the other, but if they are out of balance then specific ailments, including physical, mental and spiritual conditions will occur. Correcting the balance of yin and yang will restore the body and mind to harmony and resolve the associated problem.

In Shiatsu massage the illnesses and discomfort experienced by the individual are the symptoms of the disruption in the Chi, not something that needs to be treated on their own. This is a holistic look at the body that uses a variety of different techniques, including breathing, stretching and specific massage techniques to unblock, speed up, slow down or balance the Chi.

Techniques Used

Depending on what the practitioner determines is the cause of the disharmony in the body energy, different techniques can be used. These can include a gentle tapping on specific points on the body located along the energy meridians. Other techniques include a more typical kneading technique that is common in Western styles of massage. Stretching of the body along with rotating the body gently are also used as needed.

In Shiatsu massage there are no oils or lotions used on the skin. The practitioner is not required to directly touch your skin and traditionally a light cotton top and trousers are worn during the session.

Your First Session

Your first session will include an evaluation, where the practitioner will discuss the symptoms you are experiencing as well the techniques that will be used. This is a non-invasive holistic look at your emotional, mental and physical well-being so you will be asked questions about all of these elements.

The practitioner will also be continually assessing the energy flow through the body as the session progresses. He or she may work on small or large areas of the body during the session based on the identified needs.

We offer our clients the option of using our trained and experienced Shiatsu massage practitioner as part of their treatment program. Sessions can be completed in the office or in the comfort of your own home and at a scheduled time that fits in with your timetable.
