Niall O’Sullivan is a BACP registered psychodynamic psychotherapist. He offers a safe and thoughtful space to explore your inner life and whatever external difficulty you are facing. He practises as an associate of this practice, under the clinical supervision of Dr Philippe Jacquet.

The work he does

Bereavement and loss. Addiction. The ending of a relationship. And the long-standing patterns that were once useful and have stopped being so.

He also works with couples. That experience began in a private hospital, where he held conjoint meetings with patients and the people closest to them, and it went on to include couple therapy.

In his own words: “My approach is built on the understanding that all of us carry hidden wounds, whether they be from childhood experiences, family dynamics, later losses, or any of life’s other frustrations. We often develop strategies to ’treat’ these wounds. Some may turn to alcohol or other substances, others may channel anxieties into work or relationships, while others simply shut down and disconnect from their emotional world.”

“If you are reading this, it may be because strategies like these are no longer serving you.”

How he thinks about the work

He takes the view that the moments when we feel on the verge of breaking down are, in fact, openings, chances to uncover, examine and reform the relationship we have with ourselves.

His aim is to help you understand and integrate your past experience with the person you are now, while exploring what remains possible. He describes that work as going beyond making the present bearable: it can allow meaning and even beauty to be found in the most tender and painful parts of us.

That orientation sits closely with the frame the whole practice works within, that a symptom is a solution that once worked, and that understanding what it was for is where the work begins.
